I needed to oust those fire demons, and this was the way to do it. â€Å"Eugenie?† A soft voice pulled me from my churning emotions. â€Å"Kiyo!† He stood there in the hall, and I wondered how much he’d overheard. It didn’t matter. I was just so insanely happy to see him. The heaviness in my heart lightened, and if there hadn’t been so many witnesses, I would have run into his arms. I’m worried about girls disappearing and possibly being abducted by those who face no accountability. And all of this is on top of trying to still live my human life and keep every goddamned Otherworldly guy out of my pants. So don’t come here and start dictating to me. You’re never around. You have no idea what I’m going through!† I was shouting, and it was a wonder none of the servants had come scurrying to see what was wrong. My breathing was heavy, and I’d clenched my fists without even realizing it in my anger. â€Å"Why are you here anyway?† I demanded. Kiyo’s dark eyes were hard to read, but I could see some of his earlier fury had cooled. I wasn’t sure if he’d reconsidered his accusations or simply decided I wasn’t worth arguing with. â€Å"I came to see if you wanted to visit the baby.† â€Å"Oh.† For whatever reason, it was like a bucket of cold water on the rest of my anger. I sighed. â€Å"Kiyo†¦I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have yelled at you-â€Å" He raked a hand through his dark hair. â€Å"And I shouldn’t have jumped all over you.† A sly grin turned up the edges of his lips. â€Å"Well, not that way at least. But you’re right-I haven’t been around. You’re going through a lot that I’ve missed, and I don’t know fully what’s going on. Tell me about the baby.† And like that, Kiyo’s face completely transformed. Joy and wonder of such purity filled his features that it was amazing to behold. I never†¦she’s like nothing I ever could have imagined.† Something sank in the pit of my stomach, something cold and leaden. I almost wished he’d get angry again so that my own fury would return. Anger was warmer than sadness. Forcing a smile, I reached for his hand. â€Å"I’m so happy for you,† I said. â€Å"I’d love to see her. What’s her name?† â€Å"Luisa.† He said the name like a prayer, like a magic word that could fix all the world’s ills. I’d heard him say my name like that too, often in the midst of sex. Obviously, his attitudes toward the two of us were a bit different, but the intensity of his love was similar. â€Å"It’s a pretty name,† I said, still trying to smile. A moment of uneasy silence fell. â€Å"Ready to go?† I was growing better at convincing Rurik to let me leave without an escort, and Kiyo and I were able to make good time to the Willow Land. I rode on horseback, and he ran alongside in fox form, able to easily match my pace. While this wasn’t an official state visit, I’d grumblingly put on a gentry dress in recognition of my queenly status. It was a simple one, pale blue with cap sleeves and light material. It actually had kind of a Jane Austen feel. The worst part was that since I refused to ride sidesaddle or anything ridiculous like that, the skirt rode up on my legs. With only Kiyo to see me, it didn’t matter too much, and he certainly didn’t mind. Along the way, we passed another village in my kingdom, one I had yet to visit. I recognized it from Shaya’s descriptions. I was pretty sure it was one of the ones with copper ore. Near its outskirts, I could see people working and digging. I made a mental note to stop on the way back-if the Otherworld didn’t decide to send me through a different route. Kiyo’s fox form meant we didn’t have to make any conversation. Spring was progressing rapidly in the Willow Land when we arrived. In fact, it had come much more quickly than I would have expected based on my last visit. There was no snow, and buds were bursting on the trees. The air was warm and picnic-perfect, with crocuses, daffodils, and other spring bulbs sprouting in brightly colored clusters. I was startled at the change until I remembered how the Otherworldly kingdoms were tied to their monarchs. I could pour my energy into the land and help heal it. Dorian kept the Oak Land in a perpetual state of autumn because it brought on memories of his youth that made him feel good and strong. If Maiwenn had just given birth, wouldn’t her land reflect that burst of new life? Kiyo shifted back to human shape as we approached the castle’s main gates. Those guarding it gave me curious looks but welcomed him with cheers and genuine affection. Indeed, the happy energy was palpable as we walked the halls. Everyone in Maiwenn’s hold acted as though they were on their way to a party. Smiles shone on everyone’s faces. Kiyo required no escort or guide as he led us swiftly through the halls, up a few flights of stairs, and into Maiwenn’s bedroom. As soon as we entered, I decided I might need to have a talk with Shaya about redecorating. The bedroom I’d inherited from Aeson was that of a medieval warlord, with blocky furniture, few windows, and everything-from the thick stone walls to the bedding-in dark, somber colors. Maiwenn’s room was light and airy, ringed in windows and filled with exquisite, delicate-looking birch furniture. The sheets on her bed were lavender silk, and gauzy material hung from the canopy. It looked like a room befitting a fairy princess-er, queen. â€Å"Eugenie,† she said, smiling. She was sitting in bed with pillows propped behind her. â€Å"I was hoping you’d come.† Were you? I wondered. A day after having a baby, she looked as gorgeous as usual, her golden hair cascading over a soft pink nightgown. A delicate crown of pearls, even in bed, adorned that luxurious hair, and I pettily thought again about my alleged need for a crown. Kiyo claimed it would send the wrong message, but I suddenly kind of wanted one. A small bundle was in Maiwenn’s arms, but mostly all I could see of Luisa was a lacy white cap and a shock of black hair. I smiled back and approached tentatively. You must be so happy.† Maiwenn’s smile became even more radiant. She met Kiyo’s eyes, and something passed between them-not romantic, exactly, but a strong emotion I wasn’t privy to. Each cell was examined under a microscope in order to observe certain organelles and movements, which would not be possible to view with the naked eye. Under the 40 magnification, elodea canadensis’ (marine plant) has observable chloroplasts and rigid cell wall structures. Elodea canadensis also has a unique function that can be observed under a microscope called cytoplasmic streaming; this is the flow of the cytoplasm around inner lining of the cellular membrane. Epithelial cells, also known as human cheek cells, have observable organelles. Under the 40 magnification, the irregular shaped cell membrane as well as the nucleus was distinguishable. Paramecium Aurelia (protista found in ponds and swamps) have ciliates that are visible at the 40 magnification. They have the appearance of thin, short hairs that surround the cell membrane (embedded in the pellicle). Its function is to help the motility of this unicellular structure, which observed can be described as pushing the cell forward as the hairs pull back. Euglena gracilis (protista found in ponds and swamps) under a magnification of 40 has an observable flagellum. This long thin protein structure at the end of the cell does a propeller motion, allowing the cell to be mobile. Saccharomyces cerevisiae (yeast cell) under the 100 magnification appeared as large round cells. Their cell walls, cytoplasm and nucleus are visible. Staphylococcus aureus (found on animal skin or mucosal surfaces) are difficult to find due to their small size, although they are distinguishable at 100 magnification. They shake and quiver spastically as well as randomly. The purpose of this experiment is to observe cells through the use of a microscope and further be able to determine differences and similarities between these cells. All of these cells were observed with the Olympus Model CX31RBSFA microscope. The outcomes of this experiment are to confirm the details of certain organelles, mobility patterns and other specific cellular processes. Firstly, the cell elodea Canadensis was analyzed. The qualitative qualities observed were light green rectangular cells joined in a stack formation, bonded together by their cell walls. Under the microscope, cytoplasmic streaming was evident when the chloroplasts moved in the same direction along the inside of the cell membrane. The epithelial cell observed under the 40 magnification has observable cellular characteristics. The cellular shape was round, but particularly irregular. A cellular membrane was visible as well as the cell’s nucleus. The cell measured was 21. 6 um (25. 8 um, refer to table 1 group average) and the nucleus was measured 1. 4 um (1. 7 um, refer to table 1 group average). The length of the cell was measured 51 um (47. 6 um, refer to table 1 group average). Flagellum is a long thin tail like structure that propels in a circular motion, causing the cell to move in a non-uniform and jerky fashion. Prisoners are beaten, fed unhealthy food, subjected to unsanitary rooms and sometimes, confined, and transported to prison quarters away from their home states, away from family support but far from their criminal networks. The imbalance in the races represented in prison only reflects the partiality of the justice system where judges sentence criminals based on their ethnicity or nationality. Incarceration rates describe the ratio of how many prisoners per population of 100,000 are committed to penitentiary institutions. The United States boasts the highest incarceration rate in the world: 753 per 100,000 people as at 2008. This ratio represents a 240 percent increase since 1980. This ratio means that 3.5% of the U.S. adult population is behind bars. Compared to the U.S, the rest of the world have much lower incarceration rates for example, Russia holds the second place with 629 per 100,000; Rwanda with 593 per 100,000 and Cuba with 531 per 100,000. Compare these numbers with Australia 134, Canada 116, England 153 and Japan 63 (Schmitt 2010).    The United States leads the list in incarceration rates because of the privatized prison system. The federal and state penitentiaries employ the facilities of private owners; therefore making imprisonment a mon ey-making business. In 2008, federal, state, and local prison institutions demanded $75 billion to keep supporting its inmate population. Criminologists observe that if  prisoners convicted of non-violent crimes were not incarcerated, prison costs would be reduced to $16.9 billion per year. Another reason for America's mass imprisonment is the discriminatory conviction of prisoners belonging to certain races, particularly Blacks and Hispanics which together make up about three-quarters of the prison population. The trend of longer prison terms for minor crimes also is a factor contributing to mass imprisonment.   The prison system is a system which systematically disenfranchises inmates, stripping from poor minorities a key right. As a result, a section of the population remains voiceless. The implications here become more political since in inner city constituents the residents cannot cast their vote and decide on government or even run for office. Who Cares about Student Apathy? Over the last several months I have been emerged in the issue of voter apathy. This year only 8.3% of students voted in our Student Government elections. This became an important issue to me since I first came to high school. I watched many of my friends show no interest in what was going on around high school. They did not know any of the candidates and they did not seem to care what happened to the organization that carried the most weight in conveying student interests to the administration. From this discourse, I set out this semester with goals in mind. 1) Increase voter turnout in the SGA election 2) Make voting available on-line 3) Increase student interest in SGA Needless to say I failed at all 3 goals. Our voter turnout went down from the previous year, and I was told voting on-line had already been discussed and the administration had decided that it was not practical. It is hard to measure whether I increased interest in student government, however, based on the previous two, I believe interest has not increased. While at this point in my endeavors I became frustrated. That did not stop me. I started simply talking to people I know about voting. I asked them why they thought students had apathy and what they thought might change that. These discussions changed my outlook completely. I was no longer concerned with just getting everyone to the polls because I realized that it took more than that to get people involved. In order for students to vote, they must strongly believe that what is happening affects them personally and that by voting they are not only taking a stand about something, but also they believe their stand will make a difference. Students who are not voting for these reasons probably should not be voting. This was a turning point in my process, and from here I took two new steps. 1) I developed a survey on voting 2) I created an information sheet to publicize the SGA election The SGA election is not highly publized, and I felt it might be beneficial to post sheets telling students how and where to vote. The Trayvon Martin shooting is a perfect case of intercultural communication involving racial perceptions. In this case Trayvon Martin was shot and killed because of his suspicious behavior and what he was wearing. This made national news and was associated with a hate crime. During the night of February 26, 2012 George Zimmerman was running an errand and while he was doing that Zimmerman spotted a Man walking and having a suspicious behavior by cutting in between houses. The Sanford, Florida Police report â€Å"The encounter between George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin was ultimately avoidable by Zimmerman, if Zimmerman had remained in his vehicle and awaited the arrival of law enforcement, or conversely, if he had identified himself to Martin as a concerned citizen and initiated dialog in an effort to dispel each party’s concern† (William, USA Today). When this made national news made citizens were outraged about the shooting saying â€Å"â€Å"Trayvon was stopped because of his ethnicity† (NY Daily News). Many people across the country are relating to this shooting saying racial perception is going on every way. The shooting of Trayvon Martin is a prime example of how perception play its role in stereotyping. The reason why people have racial perceptions is because of selection. Selection is a three part process and the one that sticks out here is repetition. Obviously George Zimmerman has had repetitive personal experience’s involving suspicious behavior with African Americans. George Zimmerman was a concerned citizen and wanted to keep his community safe he â€Å"was extremely concerned about burglaries; he called the police several times to report suspicious people walking around Retreat at Twin Lakes, his gated community† (NY Times). If this wasn’t a innocent 17 year old getting gunned down for suspicious behavior then it would have been interpretive way differently. But instead in the eyes of the public this is interpretive as a teenager being shot because of the racial perception of wearing a hooded sweatshirt and being black. George Zimmerman could have approached this way differently then just chasing him down and getting into a violent altercation and leaving a teenager dead. If he would communicated with Trayvon then just assuming he was a thug and a thief just because he looked suspicious. The only reason why Trayvon looked suspicious is because of hooded sweatshirt because people associate it with hip hop culture and have the perceptual context that make people believe that the person is suspicious. The only reason why this happened is because George Zimmerman had such intense repetitive past experiences involving African American having suspicious behaviors so he just assumed. All in all, because George Zimmerman had past perceptions on suspicious behavior he just assumed Trayvon Martin to be a bad person. This will negatively impact racial perceptions for years to come.
